I think that everyone would agree
that 1982 was a great year for all
those in love with the Hip Hop culture.
That year, Wylie Wallace gave birth
to the one we call the “Reluctant
Don”, Kelvin Daniel Wallace,
better known as K. Wall. When we asked
K. Wall to give us an in-depth telling
of his background, he replied, “My
DNA is in the street, whatever you
want to know about me, ask around”.
K. Wall was born on February 22, 1982
in Berkeley, California. He later
moved with is parents to the neighboring
City of Oakland. “I don’t
like to rap too much about the negativity
in my city, hell, you can read about
it or watch it on the news. I choose
to prove that we are worth much more
than sex, drugs, guns, murder, and
the country’s highest dropout
rate”, says K. Wall. “I
feel Oakland is the way it is because
everyone who could help, turns their
back. Everyone, from successful ball
players, actors, artists, politicians,
and so on. Oakland has a lot of successful
and influential people but you would
never know it because they don’t
claim it. They will only say they
are from Oakland when they need “hood”
credibility. Otherwise, they won’t
say anything and move 400 miles away
without reaching back and leave our
kids to struggle to find their own
way out”, says K. Wall.
K. Wall, in his own way, tells the
stories of where he’s from like
his favorite MC’s Scareface,
Jay-Z, Lloyd Banks, 2 Pac and Nas.
But K. Wall would much rather share
some of the stories of having fun,
being young with money and dreams
and seeing life past 21, which a lot
of his friends didn’t. When
he raps about happier moments, he
reminds you of his other influences,
LL Cool J, Will Smith, Heavy D, and
MC Hammer. K. Wall cleverly mixes
his “square” with his
hustle and gives a good balance of
a gangsta and a gentleman. K. Wall
doesn’t look at himself as a
“thug” or a “gangsta”
but as a “grown ass man”.
“If I mention being on the block
or carrying a gun, it’s as a
grown ass man handling his business,
not a thug. If I mention my sexual
exploits, it’s not as a playboy;
it’s as a grown ass man, who
enjoys female company. I’m grown
with this”, says K. Wall.
By the time K. Wall was 19, he felt
he was faced with a lot of dead end
situations and that will not be him
in the next five years. So he formed
a record label called Cali’s
Gift Music. “I refuse to be
a ho in this pimped out industry.
Give me my bread” says K. Wall.
So far, Cali’s Gift Music has
released a number of mixed tapes headed
by K. Wall that average over 3000
units sold in the streets each release.
But due to finances, K. Wall has not
been able to promote their product
in a manner that would get the attention
of any major record executive, to
see the strong potential of K. Wall.
This brought on the relationship with
3sixty5 Records. With a new label
behind him K.Wall feels confident
in his ability to reach the souls
of the streets across the masses.
When asked how he felt about his new
label home he had this to say “They
don’t realize what they just
done, its similar to 50 cent buying
into Vitamin Water early… we
bout to get to the money!!!
